In December every year British towns come to life with the Christmas lights and the sparkle added by this pretty holiday. Markets spring up selling all sorts of products, some that seem entirely logical and some selling goods you have never even heard of.

Shopping in Newcastle City Centre

Taking day trips or even weekend breaks to some of these towns makes for an easy getaway and a chance to do your Christmas shopping in a slightly different spot from usual with nights in a cosy hotel. In the North East of England there are various towns and spots perfect for a winter getaway. Newcastle has a vast shopping experience on offer with one of the biggest shopping malls in the county just on the edge of the town. Newcastle is a half hour Metro ride from South Shields. The ride is interesting, with numerous vistas of the activity on the Tyne, and a view of Newcastle as you enter from the South that is very impressive. You tend not to appreciate the view of the Tyne Bridge and other landmarks when you drive into Newcastle. And there is no hassle with parking in Newcastle city centre. The metro station is a few minutes’ walk from the Kingsmere Guest House, so you don’t need your car keys for a day’s shopping in Newcastle city centre. How relaxing is that?

If you are looking for a slightly quieter getaway for the winter then South Shields might be just the place. This historic town was once a major port in the area; situated on both the famous River Tyne and the coast there is ample opportunity for lovely wintery walks along the beach and watching the waves; you might want to wait until summer to take a dip though.
You can access both of the South Shields beaches – Little Haven and Sand Haven, from the Kingsmere Guest House via a pleasant walk through North Marine Park. The sea front itself has a very well appointed promenade as well as parks and fairground attractions on offer and a boating lake for a little low risk water sporting activity. South Shields council have done a wonderful job of making the seafront interesting and inviting for visitors to South Shields throughout the year.

South Shields town centre has a number of shops, both high street and small independent shops that will offer a range of places to look. There are also a number of cultural spots in South Shields, with a local museum and art gallery, the former of which has a permanent exhibition dedicated to the life and work of Catherine Cookson.

For evening time there is also a range of nightlife on offer in South Shields, with various restaurants boasting cuisine from all over the world and a large number of bars and clubs. South Shields combines its family friendly feel with a very active night life and is very welcoming towards tourists and visitors.
At Smugglers Cove and Ocean Beach there are numerous activities are available with the children in mind and likewise there are a number of restaurants that are suitable for the kids.
